Disobedience is totally legitimate when fighting against unjust laws or some despot people settle in the power dynamics. Arrived at the current point, a coming-together of unions, neighborhood groups, human rights activists and normal citizens have created Disobedience Campaign 2014. A call to society to be positioned firmly and massively against serious regression in social and economic rights that we are living.
“The right to quality education, healthcare, housing, employment, a clean environment and affordable energy have been relentlessly undermined by public funding cuts. Wealth, and thus the right to such basic necessities, has become increasingly concentrated in fewer hands, leaving more and more of the population marginalised”, it is said in their manifesto, that has been signed for more than twenty organizations and near fifty people.
After months of meetings and debates, the Campaign has planned several activities:
- On March 25th at 18:30 in the Aula Magna of the UB -Raval an afternoon roundtables held around the reflections on new forms of criminalization of protest and control of information, criminal management of poverty and harassment to sexual and reproductive rights, among others. - On March 29th at 18:30 at Pl.Catalunya it will be held a massive mobilization to demand the empowerment against cuts in civil liberties. “The Spanish government reacted by proposing a wholesale restructuring of basic rights and freedoms. Under the guise of ‘democracy’, the reforms in fact seek to reimpose authoritarian laws that would obliterate decades of social progress. These include proposed amendments to the Criminal Code, the Criminal Procedure Act, the Abortion Act, the Public Safety Act and the Private Security Act, in effect returning the country to the 1970’s”, says the Campaign.
NOVACT is added to this call and encourage people to use nonviolence as a strategy of political pressure against injustice; to disobey to demonstrate the social power we have when we work together; and to claim that civil and social rights can not be trimmed down.
