“I am neither a FEMEN activist nor an LGBT activist. I am a Catalan aid worker for the NOVACT NGO expatriate in Morocco according to the terms set in the Royal Decree 519/2006, of April 28, by which is established the Aid Workers’ Statute ” so began the speach of our delegate from Morocco Laia Vila, in front of MEPs, members of the commission of the Maghreb and intergroup representatives of LGBTI rights on Wednesday July 1st in Brussels.
On June 3rd, our delegate in Morocco was expelled from the country in a context of significant deterioration of fundamental rights and freedoms of the Moroccan population. The arrest and expulsion was another chapter in this repressive institutional campaign on those organizations and social movements that defend human rights. In this situation, the media and the Moroccan institutions, soon spread different and not proved news on our delegate. Therefore, a press conference and several meetings took place in Brussels. The goal: to clarify and explain the current situation and provide a report of the events from the voice of his own protagonist.
“My actions in Morocco are not part of an unilateral and personal decision taken at a precise moment of my life, but fall within the scope of the Spanish Cooperation which is governed by the IV Master Plan for Spanish Cooperation 2012-2016” , highlighted Vila.
