Escalation of violence in the West Bank

After the murder of two Israeli settlers in Jerusalem last Thursday October 1st, in the West Bank and especially in East Jerusalem has been, and still remains, a wave of uncontrolled violence by settlers and Israeli security forces against Palestinians and their properties.

Third intifada is shout, but experts as Joan Cañete Bayle explain that “there is none of the preconditions that could lead to think about a third intifada.” However,  the Palestinian population is exhausted by free daily violence that is perpetuated by the state of Israel. “There is a daily intifada, not the third,” said Jaled Hedmi in the article published by journalist Ana Alba. “Stress and tension in Jerusalem and the West Bank are permanent, but periodically triggered by specific events.” goes on saying Alba.

Like last year, this state of tension and violence is generated at the beginning of the Jewish holidays in mid-September for issues about the Temple Mount and the limitations imposed on Palestinians by the Israeli police for themes of security. While it is true that the escalation has been following the murder of the two settlers, the reaction of the Israeli population is reaching unprecedented levels. One example is the press release made by the Yesh Din organization where are listed the incidents occurred in the last days.

Settlers have attacked cars parked on the road and in the village of Burin, protected and supported by Israeli forces. About 40 Palestinian vehicles were damaged. In addition, dozens of people traveling in the vehicle were injured. The settlers used stones, sharp tools and sticks in their attacks in the presence of the soldiers. Among the damaged vehicles there is even an ambulance that has been arrested while carrying a woman to the hospital with her two children. They also torched ancient olive trees in Burin farmland and attempted at the work of the firemen by launching burning tires. In addition to settler violence, for five days, Israeli forces continue to use excessive force against peaceful demonstrations organized by Palestinian civilians in protest against the escalating violence. The number of wounded between the Palestinian civilians is more than 170. More than 3 Palestinians were killed by the police intentionally and with no apparent reason, including a 13-years old boy from the Aida Refugee Camp, killed near Bethlehem.

In response at this situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, think “to end the latest and umpteenth spiral of violence with a deathmatch against Palestinian terrorism”.

Meanwhile, The Palestinian Popular Struggle Coordinating Committees  say in a statement that “while Israeli impunity continues, so will the killing of Palestinian children”. Also remember that “Israel’s use of lethal weapons against Palestinian civilians in the so-called scenarios ‘crowd control’ within the Occupied Palestinian Territory is set as usual despite the Independent Commission of Inquiry on Gaza in 2014 and declared its concern for “regular use of live ammunition, even in situations where there is no direct or imminent threat to other individuals.” This highlights that “tragedies like the death of Abd al-Raham can not be seen as exceptions, but rather as the natural result of discriminatory Israeli policy. “

Likewise, The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) calls upon the international community to take immediate and effective actions to put an end to such crimes. No one can predict how the situation will evolve, but the escalation of violence  is expected to goes on in the next few days. Meanwhile, the Palestinians try to defend themselves as they can against such impunity that protects Israel.

Here is a list of the various statements issued in recent weeks:
