On Saturday October 24th, thousands of people in Tangier took to the streets for the second time, with candles in their hands, to protest against the electricity services company Amendis, whose bills are considered too expensive.
The TelQuel newspaper reports, the so called “revolt of the candles” consisted, apart from the demonstrations, in a call to cut electricity from 20h to 22h and illuminate the city with only candlelight. Unlike the first event, this was more massive than the previous week and for more than two hours, the city was plunged into darkness.
According to the online newspaper Hespress, the event experienced altercations between police and protesters and was dispersed by the security forces in the main meeting point, Place des Nations, with water cannons.
The article of Le360 reported that a dozen people were arrested at the end of the march, but police spokesman said the violence was from “isolated cases”. The Moroccan League for the Defense of Human Rights, which closely follows the arrests, was a party to the hearing of cases held on October 27th.
On Saturday October 31st, nearly twice as many people have taken to the street, this time with no incidents of public disorder.
People who could not attend the demonstration have also responded to the call by turning off the lights and lighting candles, as shown in this report of Tanja24.
