Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are a pillar of the rule of law and democracy. It is an indicator of pluralism and citizen participation. The case of Morocco is a paradigmatic case. Although the independent press of the last two decades in Morocco has increased in number and innovative ways to reach citizenship, the state and the apparatus of power have also strengthened the measures and means to obstruct, control and repress such freedom. All these aspects also converge towards the reinforcement of journalists’ self-censorship in relation to the red lines, traditionally based on monarchy, religion and territorial integrity in relation to the question of the Sahara.
